What to do when a safety switch keeps tripping

A safety switch or circuit breaker operates to interrupt power under certain fault or overload conditions. A device that will not remain on, or trips again after being reset, needs attention.

Do not repeatedly reset it

Instead, note which parts of the property lost power and what appliances or equipment were being used before the trip. If something appears damaged, wet, unusually hot or burnt, do not touch or use it.

What to record

Never open a switchboard or work on fixed wiring. If there is smoke, fire, arcing, water near electrical equipment or immediate risk, move clear and call 000.
